About the Author
Martin Mitchell became interested in geography as a child when he spent hours looking at maps and attempting to draw his own. Later, when employed by both a cattle ranch in Surprise Valley and the US Forest Service in the southern Cascades, Martin became interested in physical geography and specifically how we as a culture utilize natural resources.
He graduated from the California State University-Chico with a degree in geography, after which he spent two years working as a land-use planner for Contra Costa County, California where he permitted natural gas wells, wind power projects, landfills and toxic wastes disposal facilities. He then earned an MA in geography at the University of Georgia, and went on to the University of Illinois where he earned his PhD in 1993. He has been a professor of geography at Minnesota State University located in Mankato since 1993. He works with a group of dedicated research scientists at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources specializing in upland game birds.
