Found like unwanted trash in an abandoned house, Ruby grew up to achieve the impossible! Join her on a wonderful odyssey that has been her life . . . a real doggie epic! Ruby is a service dog, a veteran of stage plays, worked at a radio station as a co-host and has appeared in newspapers around the world. Meet the fascinating people, celebrities, and dogs Ruby has worked with, lived with, and helped along the way. Wait with Ruby and her family in the blistering South Dakota sun when the motor home breaks down, only to wish they hadn’t been rescued when they see the tow truck operators. Ruby has traveled to Hollywood to appear on The Bonnie Hunt Show. (Bonnie loved Ruby!) She had a driver, a limo and a four star hotel . . . not bad for a little dog nobody wanted. But Ruby found that all that glitters was not always gold and then, cancer came a calling. Once again, with the help from an angel, Ruby rallied her indomitable spirit to survive. Ruby’s story has it all: fun, gritty drama, high emotion, excitement, anger, laughter and betrayal. It is a living, breathing story that will leave adoptive pet parents cheering.

About the Author

Patrick Bettendorf lives with his wife, Lynn; youngest daughter, Sadie; and ''the tribe'' in a small country town just northeast of St. Paul/Minneapolis. He has been a male model, an actor of stage and industrial training films, a radio personality, and a scriptwriter. He is founder and managing director of Duck Soup Players theater company. Since 1969, Duck Soup Players has brought comedy productions to those who can't easily get out to enjoy all the community has to offer -- those living in senior residences or hospitals. The players also did seven USO tours of VA hospitals and remote military bases to rave reviews. In 1983, Duck Soup Players was invited by President Reagan to Washington, DC, to help celebrate USO's fortieth anniversary. It was during his time with the players that Patrick saw the painful yearning the residents and patients had for a sense of normalcy in their lives. A need for something from happier times, primarily pets. Being a dog lover, he set a path to do something about it. In the helping of others, he healed himself along the way.

What's being said

"The journey of Ruby, who was found emaciated and abandoned as a pup, is worthy of Hollywood. It's a story of rebirth and love that we can all learn from....Nothing short of spectacular. I loved this book!"

-William Hageman, The Chicago Tribune

A dog star is born...and the future is so bright, she's gotta wear shades. (which she does often) Rock on Ruby!

-Julia Szabo, author of six books and New York Columnist

Ruby goes from unwanted pup to one of the most adorable dogs America knows and loves....This is a great book!

-The American Dog Magazine

Ruby's Tale, an inspiring story of how one throw-away dog has enriched the lives of so many people, is a joy to read and has re-ignited my passion for reading.

-Karen Delise, Author: The Pit Bull Placebo: The Media, Myths and Politics of Canine Aggression

Review:
I alternately smiled then teared up throughout my reading of Ruby’s Tale: A True Rags to Riches Story by Patrick Bettendorf, which hits the shelves this week! Ruby is one special dog who has touched the lives of countless people throughout the U.S. and also in Europe where American Pit Bull Terriers, like Ruby, remain banned in almost every nation. Pat Bettendorf is Ruby’s agreeable bodyguard, chauffeur, agent, scheduler, and above all best friend! It is clear that Pat also benefits from Ruby’s visits to senior citizens in hospitals and nursing homes where he and Ruby listen to living history and ease the physical or emotional pain that accompanies age. Family vacations in the motor home with six dogs and Ruby's escapades on radio and stage had me alternating between awe and laughter. Pat’s pace is excellent, his writing style is upbeat and richly descriptive. There is certainly adventure, fun, heartbreak, laughter and tears. The author maintains dignity while battling ignorant people’s misconceptions and hatred of pit bulls. Ruby’s cancer story and the secret angel who pays for her surgeries is charming. The reader cannot help but cheer for Ruby and Pat every step of the way, savoring each chapter while sneaking a peak into the next. The many life's lessons imparted in Ruby’s Tale will surely resonate with people who have always had dogs and even those who never have. Ruby’s gentleness, strength of character and perseverance will encourage responsible ownership no matter the breed. And while Mr. Bettendorf says "It's simply a book about the incredible life story of a little rescue dog that just happens to be a Pit bull", Ruby's Tale might possibly change the hearts and minds of those in the media and general populace who equate pit bulls with monsters. Not quite sure how pat packed so much into a relatively short book but I wanted it to go on and on. Ruby is a definitely a gem, and Brooklyn looks forward to welcoming her this October where she will shine at City Pitties’ 3rd Annual Brooklyn Dog Coat and Blanket Drive to keep homeless dogs warm until they find a forever home! To thank Ruby for participating and signing her new book at our event, clothing designer Dolores Piscotta will outfit both Ruby the Famous Service Dog and Mucca the City Pittie in dog coats made just for these two divas! I can’t wait to meet Ruby and Pat in person, and I encourage all dog lovers and those curious about therapy dogs, service dogs, the whacky world of celebrity dogs, canine blood donations, and dogs who get a bad rap to buy their copy today!
