The year is 1864. In the aftermath of the Sioux Conflict of 1862, many families in the Minnesota River Valley are now separated. Dealing with kidnappings, disorienting swamps, separation, murder, and lifethreatening ambushes, so, too, do Hawk, Jake, and their gang of adventurers encounter the real life characters of HenryMayhew, entrepreneur, mineral prospector, and driving force behind the development of Grand Marais; Clement Beaulieu, a man instrumental in the building of the city of Crow Wing; and George Nettleton, credited with the construction of the first building in Duluth.
